Using the Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack SDK
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:08:14 PM »
This post provides instructions on using the Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack SDK with Absoft Pro Fortran 11.0 and later.

The Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack SDK provides a Microsoft implementation of the Message Passing Interface that is based on MPICH2 from Argonne National Laboratory. While it is intended to be used in conjunction with the Microsoft HPC Server 2008 or Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 environments, it is also suitable for MPI development on other versions of Microsoft's Windows operating system. The version of the Compute Cluster Pack SDK used to produce these notes was obtained from Microsoft's Download Center. The SDK is available as both 32 bit and 64 bit Microsoft MSI installers.

INSTALL THE COMPUTE CLUSTER PACK SDK

Obtain and install the Compute Cluster Pack SDK which is appropriate for your system. Both  32 and 64 bit versions are available from the Microsoft website. During installation, a directory named C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack is created on your system, This directory contains the include files and libraries required for MPI development with Absoft Pro Fortran 11.0 and later.

COMPILING AND LINKING WITH THE COMPUTE  CLUSTER PACK  SDK

When compiling and linking Fortran MPI programs with the Compute Cluster Pack SDK, you will need to add the appropriate include path and DLL import library. For 32 bit development,  the include path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Include\i386 and the import library is  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Lib\i386\msmpi.lib.  For 64 bit development, the include path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Include\amd64 and the import library is  C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Lib\amd64\msmpi.lib.

You can simplify your development by copying the include files and  DLL import libraries files into your Absoft Pro Fortran directory:

1. Copy the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Include\i386\mpif.h to your Absoft f90includes directory
2. Copy the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Include\amd64\mpif.h  to your Absoft f90includes64 directory
3. Copy the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Lib\i386\msmpi.lib to your Absoft lib directory
4. Copy the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\Lib\amd64\msmpi.lib to your Absoft lib64 directory

RUNNING COMPUTE CLUSTER PACK EXECUTABLES

The Compute Cluster Pack MPI executive is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack\bin\mpiexec.exe

The path to this file is automatically added to your global command path during installation of the Compute Cluster Pack SDK. You can run your MPI applications from the Absoft Development Command prompt by entering:

mpiexec.exe -n <number of processes> name_of_application
